Father Ray Nelson - Pastor
Father Ray was ordained at St. Bernard’s School in New Jersey. He continued his education as a Phi Beta Kappa graduate at Williams College. He is a graduate of the Harvard Divinity School receiving a S.T.B and The Episcopal Theological School concentrating on Anglican Studies.
After ordination, he served as Episcopal Priest and independent school headmaster in the United States and Europe for the following 38 years. Father Ray has been honored by the National Association of supply priests. And most recently he has served as interim rector in the Dioceses of Delaware and Pennsylvania.
Father Ray is happily married to his wife, Mimi Van Swall Nelson, of Syracuse, NY. They share (from previous marriages) five children and eight grandchildren. They are pleased to say that two of their grandchildren are Boston Youth Symphony concert bassoonists……..and Father Ray says “I can whistle, sing and chant – but that’s it”. Four of Father Ray’s children were varsity college athletes at Univ. of Vermont and Univ. of Virginia and they continue to be avid skiers. Mimi’s daughter, Leigh, is a graduate of William & Mary.
Father Ray and Mimi feel that moving to Virginia is coming ‘home’ as he served as Headmaster at Trinity Episcopal School in the late eighties; his father retired to Williamsburg in 1961 and Mimi has three sisters who have transplanted here and are living South of the James.
We welcomed Father Ray as Rector of St. Barnabas in September 2013 and we are so pleased to have Mimi as part of the St. Barnabas Family
